Son Palou is a peaceful paradise with 150 hectares of olive groves, apple and cherry orchards, woods, mountains and even a waterfall! Set on the edge of the ancient hillside hamlet of Orient, this charming 14th century hotel has stunning views across the unspoilt picturesque valley.

The 600 year old buildings have been tastefully renovated to retain original features (including the sizeable olive press!), and offer an abundance of peace and tranquillity. All rooms are very welcoming and have been individually decorated with Mallorcan antiques, solid wood furnishings and crisp cotton. Dining at the house is a treat. The food is prepared from local produce (sometimes from the surrounding land) and served in a spacious dining area which spills out at the back of the house onto a stone arched patio and a cobbled courtyard, providing a perfect setting for a long leisurely breakfast or dinner.

The friendly Colom family are the original owners of the property, and also own a fifth of the magical Vale d’Orient (their grandfather owned the whole valley!). They are always happy to share any information about the picturesque surroundings, and also offer guidance on local walking and cycle routes (mountain bikes are freely available). If your aim is to conserve energy, the hotel’s spacious gardens and infinity pool are an ideal place to relax and unwind. The gardens have been immaculately landscaped with plenty of shaded areas dotted with comfortable loungers, and the pool sits in a secluded position on the edge of the garden with impressive views down the spectacular valley.

We had a very nice holiday thanks. It’s in a really wonderful position and a relaxed atmosphere. Our room was pretty, furnished with local furniture and décor. Staff and food were both excellent. — LH & GF

Thanks for your help. This came up to & above expectation. I’d recommend for peace and tranquility. Next to the infinity pool with a book was a favourite haunt during the trip. Marc was always charming and the food very good. All in all a great place. — BC

Son Palou was great – thanks for arranging the room. We wanted something special for our anniversary and the views from the terrace were gorgeous. — P & TD

Beautiful place in a fabulous setting. The peacefulness of Son Palou makes you relax straight away. The weather was quite hot so we didn’t explore much in our few days here but that made us enjoy Son Palou even more. It was great to combine this with the other place you suggest – such a contrast and felt like two holidays in one. We’d return again — K & HL

Firstly I have to thank The Other Mallorca for great advice and service – made it all the more enjoyable. Son Palou was outstanding in every respect – one of the best places I have stayed anywhere. Fabulous location, clean, friendly and relaxed. Can’t wait to go back! — D & GD

You seem to know the island pretty much inside out and this reflected in what you suggested. Son Palou and Orient are hidden but such a delight to find. It all feels miles away from any tourist area. Son Palou is in the village, so in one direction we could walk out and eat out in one of the nearby restaurants (Mandala is good) but in the other direction it owns the whole valley so from our room, the terrace and pool we just looked out onto a peaceful and unspoilt landscape. — WJ

We had a really wonderful time in Mallorca and as usual all the accommodation was very special and luxurious. We felt very spoilt at all of the hotels. Son Palou is in the most stunning location right up in the Tramuntana and the drive to it was really beautiful. The staff were quite friendly and our room and bathroom were huge with a wonderful terrace overlooking the mountains which was spectacular as were the grounds around the hotel. The communal rooms were delightful, again with an olive press and artefacts from the previous life of the building. Watching the stars at night from the terrace was a real treat and we had both lunch and dinner on the lovely terrace. The menu was great for us as there were delicious vegetarian choices, although it was quite pricey. The pool had a fabulous view. We always recommend The Other Mallorca to friends and thank you so much for helping us to put together this last minute break. As always Mallorca, off the beaten track, is a gem and the hotels you offer are exquisite. We will be back before long. — CM

Son Palou was in an even prettier setting than we expected. Fabulous views across the valley from our room, the terrace and the pool. A beautiful county house with a real Mallorcan feel and local owners who made us welcome. We would return and maybe try in a different season to explore the local walking trails. We will be in touch, thanks. — LJ

My wife and I have just had a magical few days in Orient. Martin told us it is a beautiful part of the island and it really is. We made sure we had a car to make the most of the area, and would thoroughly recommend trips out as well as just enjoying the scenery from the terrace. We particularly liked dinner at Mandala (Orient) and coffee breaks in the main square of Alaro. — JB & LJ

This was a return visit for us and we were not disappointed. The hotel has expanded (with more rooms) but it has still kept its intimate nature. Our room was immaculate, clean and beautifully furnished and we wanted for nothing at breakfast. Another visit is on the cards. — K&AT
