South - Campos, Santanyi & Es Trenc

The South has a laid back relaxed atmosphere with vast stretches of virgin white sand and turquoise waters, historical honey stone villages that come alive on market days and pretty harbours with restaurants dishing out the local catch.

General Overview

The South is home to the island's best beaches with kilometres of long white sands and pretty turquoise coves.  Several are backed by nature reserves so remain unspoilt and peaceful places to relax. The nature reserves themselves are great places for walking and bird watching. Inland the South's flat agricultural landscape makes it ideal for cycling with endless kilometres of country lanes linking sleepy ancient towns and villages.

Towns and Villages

Porto Petro is a quaint low key harbour resort with a frontline of restaurants that look down onto the boats. There’s no beach here so it remains a quiet and relaxed place.

Charming Cala Figuera is set around a deep cove where local fishermen bring in their catch and mend their nets. The low key cliff top resort and its restaurants offers great views onto the natural harbour below, where small boats bob in front of ancient seafront houses. There’s no beach here but allegedly this is the best place for diving on the island.

Set on a headland, the seaside resort of Colonial Sant Jordi is flanked on both sides by attractive sandy beaches. The town’s a bit of a maze but the best place to head for is the harbour front with its marina and seafront restaurants.

Campos is a quiet agricultural town which livens up on market day. Set in rural surroundings, it’s a friendly place with a smattering of interesting shops, restaurants and excellent bakeries.

Santanyi has become more cosmopolitan due to the insurgence of foreign buyers. Here amongst the narrow streets a mix of traditional cafes and shops can be found alongside interior design boutiques.

Favourite Beaches

The south has a great selection of beaches. The best beach on the island Es Trenc offers four kilometres of white sand and blue sea backed by dunes and a natural park. Platja d’es Dolc next to Colonial de Sant Jordi is the first of a string of attractive beaches such as Es Caragol that can be reached by foot.

The most beautiful sandy coves on the island are also in this region – Cala MondragoCala S’Amonia and Cala Llombards. See our blog on beaches in this area here.
