Nearby to the south east’s pretty coves and nature parks is the romantic retreat of Sa Galera.

Surrounded by undulating countryside, with over 5,000 almond trees and landscaped gardens, the 13th century manor house has been tastefully renovated into a luxury hideaway. Original curved ceilings and other architectural features have been preserved to compliment the hotel’s style and classic furnishings. The romantic, charming bedrooms are individually and comfortably furnished with four poster beds and pale shades of Mallorcan décor.

The pool and pretty gardens offer plenty of space for relaxing guests, whilst there’s a sauna, solarium and massages on offer for those really wanting to unwind. Sa Galera is a great place for horse lovers as the estate is home to one of the best Pure Mallorcan horse breeding centres. The hotel is happy to organise horse-riding and trekking activities and golf enthusiasts are catered for at the nearby Vall D’Or golf course (guests are offered discounted rates).

Meals can be enjoyed in the wood beamed dining room or on the pretty paved terrace. The refined hotel restaurant S’Espigo, provides a buffet style breakfast, whilst in the evening the chef prepares a la carte Mediterranean dishes from fresh local produce. The surrounding area also offers a wealth of good restaurants, in the nearby charming village of Ca’s Concos and towns of Santanyi and Felanitx. Whilst for harbour views over dinner, head to quaint Porto Petro or the more glitzy Cala D’Or.

This hotel is in a lovely setting and grounds and pool are immaculate. Staff are low key but friendly. Breakfast was good and we ate in one night and we were pleasantly surprised by quality of food. Car essential. — D & LS

A pretty rural hotel with friendly staff. We felt completely cut off from tourist Mallorca but could easily get to some really lovely places. Can Concos is the closest and has a couple of nice simple restaurants/tapas. Also close to Santanyi which is rather arty with nice restaurants and good market. Good sandy beaches just 15-20 min drive. — MS & ND

We had a really wonderful time in Mallorca and as usual all the accommodation was very special and luxurious. We felt very spoilt at all of the hotels. Sa Galera: we have stayed here twice before so knew what to expect and it completetly lived up to expectations. We had a really lovely room, with a sitting area and huge bathroom, it was on the ground floor which opened on to the courtyard. Breakfasts were always good and staff were very friendly and helpful. We didn’t use the pool much as we headed off for beaches and used the hotel as a base from which to explore. The beach-bar on Cala Llombards has gone! My husband was most disappointed not to have his 70’s rock music playing. Santanyi and Campos have both really changed over the years with many more shops, restaurants and interesting cafes. We always recommend The Other Mallorca to friends and thank you so much for helping us to put together this last minute break. As always Mallorca, off the beaten track, is a gem and the hotels you offer are exquisite. We will be back before long. — CM

I’d recommend this to anyone looking for somewhere quiet in the countryside. A car is a must as it is rural but is just 15 minutes from excellent beaches. Good breakfasts on the terrace with views. — RW

We stayed at sa galera with our two small children (2 and 4) in the little cottage at the hotel and we had a fantastic week. The hotel is set in beautiful grounds and within an easy short drive (45mins) from palma airport. We hired a car from the airport which is completely essential as the hotel is not within walking distance from any towns. the local town santanyi is within 5 minutes drive, and is a lovely ‘arty’ unspoilt mallorcan town with a lively market once a week and some good tapas and restaurants. We went to the beach most days, and the best one is Es Trenc which is just a short drive from Sa Galera (20 minutes) and it is just beautiful, backed by a nature reserve, stunning sand and sea, with two good beach bars. Cala Mondrago is also a lovely smaller cove nearby with two good beach restaurants. The staff at Sa Galera were child friendly, and very helpful. The food was good, but it was good to be able to explore the region and eat out at some of the fabulous fresh fish restaurants nearby. Overall, the hotel is a lovely rural base from which to explore this lovely unspoilt area of the island. — SS
