Spotlight on … Can Prunera: Museum of Modernism

Share this:

Can Prunera is a modernist masterpiece mansion which also houses a good collection of modern art. This is a gem hidden amongst the pretty streets in Old Town Soller. It is easy to miss or not to bother, but it is well worth the visit. The art nouveau building itself is stunning so even if you are no art fan you can’t fail to admire the architecture or to just enjoy wandering around the grand old house.

Attention to detail is everywhere, and you will find yourself flitting around each room – look out for the beautiful window engravings of dragon flies and butterflies. You can also become a little obsessed by the beautiful intricate floor tiles that vary in design throughout the rooms.

The whole house has an elegant atmosphere, topped off by the large collection of modernist furniture which is original to the house.

With so much to take in, don’t forget to admire the modern art which is located throughout the house, with large galleries on the top floor and in the basement, where original features from the ancient kitchen have also been well preserved.

It’s a great place to take kids as due to its size and location it feels very accessible. Big hits with children seem to be the swirling staircase, fabulous floor tiles (you have to see them to understand quite how interesting they are!), bold modern art and the small sculpture garden.  A favourite area amongst boys and girls alike also seems to be the unusual, albeit slightly scary doll collection!

So tear yourself away from the sun lounger, head down from your hiking in the mountains and take an hour or so to stroll around this well preserved historical Art Nouveau house. Then enjoy a coffee or a lazy lunch in Soller’s atmospheric main square, feeling pleased that you have taken in some beautiful and unique culture.

Can Prunera is located on Street Sa Lluna, Soller, Mallorca (and is just up from Soller’s main square).

Summer opening hours: March 1st – Oct 30th 10.30am – 6.30pm
